These forms of relating to others - whether we shut off, close off, maintain an exterior - a tough exterior to protect ourselves, or whether we relate to others in an overgiving way at the expense of ourselves, are both forms potentially of trauma responses and learned behaviours from our childhoods;
how we related to our families, how we were treated in childhood by our primary caregivers and worth considering when we feel and think into how we might self abandon.
